Style, May flowers, size and care: choosing a bouquet that suits her and lasts
Which bouquet to choose for Mother's Day?
In short
Start with a style that suits her, then a size that fits where she will put the bouquet. May is the season for peonies, ranunculus and roses: a seasonal bouquet will be fresher than an out-of-season one.
This guide helps you choose between styles, sizes and flowers, and avoid the few mistakes that spoil a beautiful bouquet.

Start from her taste
The best bouquet is not the biggest one; it is the one she looks at and says "that's so me." To find it, pay attention to her.
- Her home: soft or bold colors, a classic or modern style?
- Her clothes: does she often wear white and beige, or bright colors?
- Her garden or balcony: which flowers does she plant every year?
If you know her favorite flower, start there. The rest of the bouquet will follow.
Which style of bouquet?
- Country style: mixed flowers, a little loose, as if picked from the garden. For a mom who loves nature.
- Romantic: roses and pastel tones, dusty pink, cream, peach. The Mother's Day classic.
- Colorful: yellow, orange, fuchsia. For a mom full of energy.
- Elegant: white and green, clean shapes. For a minimalist home.
- Single variety: one flower in abundance, like a flower bunch or a rose bouquet.
Our seasonal bouquets change with each week's deliveries; our timeless bouquets keep the same design all year, if you want to be sure of the result.
Seasonal flowers in May
May is one of the best months for flowers.
- Peonies arrive in May, lush and fragrant.
- Ranunculus have fine, tightly layered petals.
- Roses come in every color.
- Lilac and sweet peas bring scent.
- Lily of the valley blooms at the very start of the month.
Seasonal flowers are fresher and last longer. The exact varieties in our bouquets depend on what arrives at our workshop in Vernier during Mother's Day week.
Which size to choose?
At KANEL, every bouquet comes in three sizes. To choose, think about where she will put it.
- A small table, an apartment, a room in a care home: the smallest size, easier to place.
- A dining table or a living room: the middle size.
- A large room, or to make a statement: the largest size.
Timeless bouquets cost CHF 64.90 to 104.90, seasonal bouquets CHF 74.90 to 124.90 and rose bouquets CHF 89.90 to 139.90, plus CHF 14.90 for delivery in Switzerland.
For a grandmother or a mother-in-law
For a grandmother, choose a compact bouquet with little scent that is easy to care for. If she lives in a care home, check that it accepts flowers and give the name of the unit for delivery.
For a mother-in-law, stick with an elegant style and soft colors if you don't know her taste well. A seasonal bouquet and a card signed by both of you always go down well.
Mistakes to avoid
- Lilies if she has a cat: every part of the plant is toxic to cats, even the pollen.
- Strongly scented flowers in a small room, or for someone sensitive to smells.
- Potted chrysanthemums: in French-speaking Switzerland, as in France, they are associated with All Saints' Day and graves.
- A bouquet too big for her home: it will end up in the hallway for lack of space.
- A Monday delivery: the bouquet would arrive after the day. Have it delivered on Saturday.
Making the bouquet last
Slip these tips into the card, or tell her in person.
- Trim the stems at an angle, by about half an inch, before putting them in water.
- Remove any leaves sitting in the water.
- Use a clean vase and change the water every two days.
- Keep the bouquet away from direct sun, heaters and the fruit bowl, which makes flowers wilt faster.
