In France, the modern initiative of this celebration is attributed to the village of Artas in Isère, where, in 1906, an official ceremony honored mothers of large families.

The worldwide formalization intensified at the beginning of the 20th century. In the United States, Anna Jarvis, grieving the loss of her mother, initiated a movement for official recognition of a day dedicated to mothers, leading in 1914 to the establishment of a national Mother's Day.

Europe followed shortly after, blending this tradition with its own history and local customs.
